Escape Rooms in Copenhagen — the largest and best-reviewed selection

Want to experience Copenhagen’s best escape rooms? You’ve come to the right place. Midgaard Event is Denmark’s leading escape room provider — with the most rooms, the most themes and the highest review score in the city. Our flagship Downfall is the only game in Scandinavia ever nominated for TERPECA, the world’s most prestigious ranking of escape rooms worldwide. We’re number 1 on TripAdvisor — and we know what we’re doing: we’ve been creating puzzle and mystery experiences since 2000 and escape rooms since 2016.

Whether you’re a group of friends trying escape rooms for the first time, enthusiasts chasing the very best, or a company looking for great team building in Copenhagen — this is where you’ll find Denmark’s most complete selection.

What is an escape room?

An escape room is a physical experience where you as a team must complete a fun mission using puzzles, codes and creative collaboration — all against the clock. The rooms are themed with a clear narrative that pulls you into a story from the very first second. Games can last anywhere from 10 minutes to 48 hours, but are most commonly designed for 60 minutes. Whether you write escape room or escaperoom, it covers the same exciting concept.

What are escape rooms called?

Although “escape room” is the most internationally widespread name, the concept goes by many different names. You may come across terms such as escape game, live escape room, mystery room, puzzle room, riddle room, breakout room or exit game. There is no standardisation, and all the names essentially cover the same concept: a physical, time-limited mission solved together.

The history of escape rooms

The world

The escape room concept has its roots in digital computer games. In 2004, Japanese developer Toshimitsu Tagaki released the PC game Crimson Room, where the player found themselves in a room and had to collect objects and solve tasks to escape. It was a huge success and inspired the Japanese company SCRAP to create the first physical escape room experience in 2007. Founder Takao Kato wanted players to immerse themselves in the universe and have a physical setting for the mission.

The first escape room in Europe opened in 2010 in Budapest under the name Parapark. From there the concept spread rapidly. In 2012 the first room opened in the USA, and since then the numbers have exploded. Today it is estimated that there are over 16,000 escape room venues worldwide with up to 55,000 games.

Denmark

The first escape rooms in Denmark opened in 2014 and 2015. Mindquest was the first provider in the country. Midgaard Event had, however, already been working with mysterious puzzles and puzzle games since the year 2000, long before the concept had a name. On 1 July 2016 we opened our first official escape room, Da Vinci Escape Room in Østerbro, Copenhagen. Prior to the launch, Midgaard Event acquired Mystery Escape, further developed the concept and relaunched with new games under its own name. Today we are Denmark’s undisputed largest provider with 21 permanent rooms in Copenhagen.

Who are escape rooms for?

Escape rooms are for everyone. No special prerequisites, physical strength or technical knowledge are required. All it takes is curiosity and a desire to collaborate.

Escape rooms are popular for many different occasions and target groups:

Friends and family who want a fun and different experience together, whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced enthusiast.

Companies and teams looking for high-energy team building with a strong shared experience. Escape rooms train collaboration, communication and decision-making under pressure in a way that feels natural and entertaining.

Birthdays and celebrations where you want to do something different from the usual.

Stag and hen parties where a different activity sets the mood for the rest of the evening.

School trips and youth groups that want to combine learning and collaboration with fun.

Tourists in Copenhagen who want to experience something unique and local rather than yet another museum.

Types of escape rooms

Escape rooms come in many varieties, and the concept has developed significantly since the first simple puzzle rooms. Today experiences range from classic mystery rooms with locks and keys to advanced productions with actors, special effects and cinematic scenography.

Classic escape rooms are the original form, where the team finds themselves in one or more themed rooms and solves puzzles to progress. The focus is on logic, collaboration and code-cracking.

Multi-room games are a development where players move through several rooms as the puzzles are solved. This creates progression and surprise throughout the experience.

Competitive escape rooms pit multiple teams against each other in identical rooms simultaneously. Points are tallied live, and the competitive element significantly raises the energy. Our OUTBREAK is a great example, accommodating up to 60 participants split across 10 teams.

Immersive escape rooms prioritise storytelling, atmosphere and acting over classic puzzles. The experience approaches interactive theatre, and the boundary between player and story becomes blurred. DOWNFALL is our take on this genre.

Outdoor escape rooms and puzzle trails use the city as a playing field. Participants move between locations and solve tasks along the way. Our OUTDOOR ESCAPE in Nyhavn is an example. Read more about our OUTDOOR ESCAPE ROOMS.

Mobile escape rooms are portable games that can be set up almost anywhere, and are particularly popular for corporate events and events outside Copenhagen. Read more about our MOBILE ESCAPE ROOMS.

5 tips for solving an escape room as a team

Trying an escape room for the first time can feel overwhelming, but with the right habits your team can go a long way. Here are five tips that make a real difference from the very first minute.

1. Communicate clearly

Good communication in an escape room is not about talking a lot, but about talking precisely. In a room full of impressions and time pressure, misunderstandings are the quickest way to waste precious minutes.

Be aware of who you’re talking to, and keep your message short and to the point. “There’s a red book on the second shelf from the left” is more useful than “hey, look at that book over there.”
Confirm that your message has been received, for example with a simple “got it, thanks.”
Ask clarifying questions if something is unclear, rather than assuming you’ve understood correctly.

2. Keep track of your items

A key hidden in a trouser pocket can cost the team five minutes of unnecessary searching. Keeping track of your resources means keeping track of the game.

Place all found items together in one spot in the room from the start.
Continuously divide them into two groups: “not yet used” and “already used.”
Make sure no one hides anything in their pockets or leaves props in random places.

3. Coordinate tasks

It is rarely effective if everyone on the team is looking at the same puzzle. A team working in parallel typically solves far more puzzles than a team working in a queue.

Actively divide tasks: some search the room for new clues, others work out solutions, others go through found props for connections you may have missed.
Consider appointing one coordinator who gathers all information and distributes tasks on an ongoing basis.
Announce clearly when a task is completed, for example “the bookshelf has been searched, no clues.” This prevents several people wasting time on the same thing.
Don’t hesitate to ask for a hint early. It pays off far more often to get a hint after five minutes of being stuck than to spend twenty minutes going in circles.

4. Actively use the puzzle structure

Most puzzles follow an underlying logic that can help you along if you learn to recognise it. Start by asking: what type of solution are we looking for?

Divide your resources into three categories:

Resources: physical objects and props you have found.
Information: clues, rules or important knowledge that points you towards the solution.
Register device: where you submit your answer, for example a combination lock, a padlock or a place to put an object.

Once you have an overview of all three categories, it becomes much easier to see what is missing and where to look next.

5. Choose your method: quick guess or thorough calculation

Many puzzles can be solved in two ways, and it is worth actively distinguishing between them. Use language to clarify which approach you are taking:

“A quick guess would be…” when you want to quickly test a likely solution.
“A thorough calculation gives…” when you want to systematically map out all possibilities.
Don’t give up after one failed attempt. A careless search often means missing important resources or information.
Let a new person try if the result is not as expected. A fresh pair of eyes often sees what the others have walked past three times.
Systematic thinking is almost always faster than random trial and error.

Our escape rooms in Copenhagen

Downfall — Scandinavia’s best escape room

DOWNFALL is not an ordinary escape room. It is a 120-minute spy mission with a live actor, cinematic scenography and a puzzle design built as a coherent story from start to finish. Where most escape games last 60 minutes, Downfall offers double the playing time and double the volume of puzzles, and the experience matches.

The result is an experience in a class of its own, and that’s not just our word for it. Downfall is the only escape room in Scandinavia ever nominated for TERPECA, the world’s most recognised ranking of the best escape rooms worldwide. Behind the list stands an international community of enthusiasts who together have played hundreds of thousands of escape rooms around the world. Downfall has been nominated multiple times and was in 2024 a finalist to be named among the 100 best games in the world. No other Scandinavian games have achieved the same.

Downfall is the obvious choice for experienced escape room players seeking the ultimate challenge, for enthusiasts chasing the absolute best, and for corporate groups who want to end a team building day with something that truly leaves a mark. The game is played in groups of 2 to 6 people and lasts 120 minutes at our Østerbro location in Copenhagen.

Outbreak — escape room team building for up to 60 participants

OUTBREAK is designed for larger groups and corporate events. With 10 identical games at the same venue, up to 60 participants can play simultaneously, split into teams of 2 to 6 people. It is Europe’s largest permanent escape room setup for corporate events, and there is nothing comparable in Denmark.

What makes Outbreak particularly well suited for TEAM BUILDING is the competitive element. While each team races to solve the mission as quickly as possible, all participants follow the live scores on a large screen in the communal area. Teams that have already finished their game can cheer on the others, and the tension builds as time runs out. This creates a shared experience that extends far beyond the 60 minutes in the room.

We also offer a short team exercise and feedback session after the game, so participants take concrete insights about their team’s collaboration home with them. Outbreak is also an ideal choice for school trips and larger social events where you want to bring a whole group together around something active and engaging. The story is simple and compelling: a global pandemic threatens, and the team is the last chance to complete the cure left behind by nine deceased researchers. It requires collaboration, communication and quick decisions under pressure, exactly the competencies that good team building is all about. The game takes place at our Østerbro location and is also wheelchair accessible.

Da Vinci — the classic escape room experience

DA VINCI ESCAPE ROOM is our classic game and the perfect choice for those playing escape rooms for the first time, or who love a classic escape room setup in a classic puzzle universe. The game combines timeless puzzles with an engaging story about mysteries and secret codes inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s universe, and works equally well for families, groups of friends and companies who want an accessible and entertaining experience together.

We have three identical Da Vinci rooms at our Østerbro location, which means up to three teams can play and compete against each other simultaneously. This makes the game particularly popular for smaller corporate events and departmental outings where you want a shared experience without requiring extensive preparation or a large number of participants.

The story begins with a mysterious letter from Professor Johannes Klosterberg, asking for your help to find and guard the Holy Grail. From there, 60 minutes of collaboration, code-cracking and creative problem-solving awaits in a beautifully themed room. Da Vinci is ideal as a relaxed after-work activity, as part of a meeting day programme or as a fun start to an evening in Copenhagen. The game is played in groups of 2 to 6 people and is located in Østerbro, close to Vibenshus Runddel Metro Station.

Other escape rooms and locations

In addition to Downfall, Outbreak and Da Vinci, we offer a range of other escape room experiences across three locations in Copenhagen. Altogether this provides the most complete selection of escape games and mysteries in Denmark.

Østerbro — Aldersrogade 6A

At our largest location you will find, in addition to Downfall, Outbreak and Da Vinci, SHERLOCK ESCAPE ROOM, our most challenging puzzle room. Sherlock is built for groups of up to 12 people split across two teams, who must collaborate across two separate rooms. It requires extraordinary communication and coordination, and is an ideal choice for experienced players who want to get their hands on something truly challenging.

Nyhavn — Lille Strandstræde

Centrally located in Nyhavn, close to Kongens Nytorv, we offer two very different experiences. DET STORE KUP is a humorous and accessible escape game in the style of the Olsen Gang, where the team must steal the Queen’s tiara back from a corrupt minister of justice. The game is ideal as an after-work arrangement or as a prelude to an evening in Nyhavn’s restaurant scene. OUTDOOR ESCAPE takes the experience out into the city, where the historic surroundings around Amalienborg and Nyhavn become the playing field for a dramatic murder mystery and puzzle trail. Read more about our OUTDOOR ESCAPE ROOMS.

Clockedin — Brolæggerstræde, close to Strøget

CLOCKEDIN is our escape room brand in the centre of Copenhagen, with three games for up to 15 participants. Clockedin is designed with a focus on great quality at an attractive price, and is an ideal choice for families, tourists and groups who want a central and accessible escape room experience in the heart of the city.

Escape room as team building in Copenhagen

Escape rooms have become one of the most popular choices for TEAM BUILDING COPENHAGEN and corporate events, and it is no coincidence. A good escape room mission requires exactly the competencies that strong teams are built around: communication, collaboration, task distribution and the ability to make decisions under time pressure. And it all takes place in a framework that is fun and engaging, without feeling like an exercise.

Escape rooms work particularly well as team building because the experience is concrete and shared. The team works towards a clear goal, everyone contributes, and the result is visible to all. This provides a strong shared reference that the team takes back to their everyday lives, and which often sparks reflection on how they work together. We also offer a short team exercise and feedback session after the game, so participants take concrete insights about their team’s collaboration and dynamics home with them.

For companies seeking TEAM BUILDING in Copenhagen, Midgaard Event offers escape rooms at a scale that suits all group sizes. Smaller departments of 6 to 12 people can book one or more rooms for an intimate and focused experience. Larger groups of up to 60 participants can come together around OUTBREAK, where the competitive element and live scoreboard on a large screen create a shared energy that is hard to replicate with other activities.

Escape rooms can be combined to great effect with other activities from our portfolio, such as a murder mystery, a casino event or a cocktail bar, thereby forming the framework for a full team building day or corporate party. We have experience putting together programmes that work from the first activity to the final farewell, and we are happy to help find the combination that suits your group and purpose.

Why choose escape rooms with Midgaard Event

There are many escape room providers in Copenhagen, and the offering has grown significantly in recent years. So why choose Midgaard Event?

We are specialists with extensive experience

Midgaard Event has been creating puzzle and mystery experiences since the year 2000, long before escape rooms even existed as a concept in Denmark. When we launched our first escape room in 2016 we already had 16 years of experience designing experiences that engage, entertain and bring people together. We know what works, what doesn’t work, and how to create an experience that sticks. That experience is embedded in every single game we offer.

We are the best reviewed

We are number 1 on TripAdvisor in the escape rooms category in Copenhagen, and have been for several years. That is not something we decided ourselves. It is the result of thousands of reviews from guests who took the time to tell others about their experience. Our DOWNFALL has been named Scandinavia’s best escape room and is the only game in the Nordic countries ever to have been a finalist for TERPECA, the world’s most prestigious ranking of escape rooms.

We are the largest

With 21 permanent rooms across 9 themes and 3 locations in Copenhagen, we are Denmark’s and Europe’s largest escape room provider. This means we can handle groups from 2 to 96 participants at the same venue, and that we have a theme to suit all types of groups and occasions. Whether you are a small group of friends or a large company with many departments, we have the capacity and flexibility to deliver.

We are experts in corporate events

The vast majority of our guests come from companies. We know what it takes to make a team building day succeed, and we know what can go wrong. Our staff is a combination of experienced instructors and actors, and we place great emphasis on professional delivery from first contact to the last player leaving the room. We can handle the practicalities so you can focus on the experience.

We offer much more than escape rooms

Escape rooms are one part of what Midgaard Event offers. If you need a complete programme for a team building day or corporate party, we can combine escape rooms with murder mysteries, casino events, cocktail bars and much more. We have the concepts, the experience and the staff to deliver the entire event, not just one activity.

Frequently asked questions about escape rooms in Copenhagen

How many people can play escape rooms simultaneously at Midgaard Event?

It depends on which game you choose. Our smallest games are for 2 to 6 people, while OUTBREAK can accommodate up to 60 participants split across 10 teams playing and competing simultaneously. At our Østerbro location we can accommodate up to 96 participants at a time across all games. We are therefore the provider in Denmark with the largest capacity for corporate events and group bookings.

Which escape room is best for beginners?

DA VINCI ESCAPE ROOM is our recommended starting point for first-timers. The game has a classic setup with accessible puzzles and an engaging story, and works well for all age groups. Clockedin near Strøget is also a great choice for those who want to try the concept in a central and relaxed setting.

Which escape room is the hardest and most challenging?

SHERLOCK ESCAPE ROOM is our most demanding game. It is built around two separate teams playing in their own rooms, who must continuously coordinate and share information across rooms to progress. It requires not only strong collaboration within the team, but also extraordinary coordination skills across rooms.

Which escape room is best for escape room fans and enthusiasts?

If you are used to escape rooms and want an experience that truly delivers, the answer is DOWNFALL. It is not a game you simply play, it is an experience you remember. With 120 minutes of playing time, a live actor and cinematic Cold War scenography, Downfall is built for those who want the absolute maximum from an escape room. The puzzle design is thoroughly crafted from start to finish, the story carries all the way through, and the level is in a different league from most escape rooms in this country.

That is not just our own assessment. Downfall is the only escape game in Scandinavia ever nominated for TERPECA, the world’s most recognised ranking of escape rooms. Behind the list stands an international community of dedicated enthusiasts who together have played hundreds of thousands of rooms worldwide. Downfall has been nominated multiple times and was in 2024 a finalist to be named among the 100 best games in the world. No other Nordic games have achieved the same.

Can escape rooms be used for team building?

Yes, and it is actually one of our most in-demand services. Escape rooms train collaboration, communication and decision-making under time pressure in a framework that is engaging and fun. OUTBREAK is particularly well suited for team building because up to 60 participants can play and compete simultaneously with a live scoreboard on a large screen. We also offer a short team exercise and feedback session after the game, so participants take concrete insights about their team’s collaboration home with them. The mobile games are particularly popular for corporate events, conferences and events where you want an escape room experience without transporting participants to a fixed location. How much does it cost to play an escape room?

The price typically ranges between 200 and 400 Danish kroner per person depending on the game, number of participants and any additional services. Contact us for a no-obligation quote tailored to your group, or visit escaperoom.dk for current prices on our fixed games.

Are escape rooms suitable for children?

Many of our games are suitable for children and families. For smaller groups such as families we particularly recommend Bon Appetit at Clockedin, a humorous and accessible game that works for both children and adults. For school classes and larger youth groups, OUTBREAK and DA VINCI are ideal choices, as they scale well to many participants and have an accessible difficulty level. We generally recommend that children are at least 10 to 12 years old to get the full benefit, but this varies from game to game.
