Escape games in all formats

Escape games are a world of experiences that encompass far more than a single room with a combination lock. At Midgaard Event, you'll find escape games in every format, from permanent escape rooms in Copenhagen to mobile setups deployed at your own venue anywhere in Denmark, and from outdoor puzzle trails in the city to pop-up experiences at trade fairs and shopping centres.

We have been creating puzzle and mystery experiences since 2000 and escape games since 2016, and are today Denmark's leading provider with 21 permanent rooms across three locations in Copenhagen, as well as a wide range of mobile and outdoor escape games. Whether you're a group of friends trying escape games for the first time, seasoned enthusiasts chasing the ultimate challenge, or a company looking for powerful team building, you'll find the right format here.

Escape games, mystery rooms and breakout games

Escape games go by many names. Depending on who you ask and where in the world you are, you'll encounter a wide range of terms that all cover essentially the same thing: a physical, time-limited experience where participants solve puzzles and missions together.

Escape games vs. escape rooms

Escape games and escape rooms are often used interchangeably, but there is a nuance. Escape room traditionally refers to a physical room you need to get out of, while escape game is a broader term covering all forms of physical puzzle-based experiences, regardless of whether the goal is to escape, complete a mission, or work through a story. Today, escape game is the most widely used international term, and it covers classic escape rooms, mobile setups, outdoor experiences and pop-up events alike.

Live escape games

A live escape game, also known as a live room escape game, emphasises that the experience takes place in the real world with physical props, genuine collaboration and a gamemaster guiding the session in real time. This distinguishes the concept from digital escape games and online versions that emerged in the wake of COVID-19. A live escape game is the original and most immersive form, and the only one that delivers the full physical and social experience.

Mystery rooms, breakout rooms and riddle rooms

Mystery room is a term used primarily in Denmark as an alternative to escape room. The name highlights a central element in many games: the mystery. Many escape games are built around an unsolved mystery, whether it's a murder case to crack, a crime to investigate, or a secret room concealing answers. Themes can range from classic detective stories and crime narratives to science fiction and historical adventures, but what they all have in common is that the puzzles are woven into a story that draws participants into the narrative.

Breakout room and riddle room are other variations of the same concept. Breakout room places the emphasis on breaking out or breaking codes, while riddle room highlights the puzzle element as the core of the experience. All these terms describe the same underlying concept, just with different focus in the name.

Escape games in Danish

In Danish, you'll come across terms like escape spil and udbryderspil. Udbryderspil is the most direct Danish translation of the escape room concept, and is also the term TripAdvisor uses for their category of physical escape game experiences. In that category, Escape Room by Midgaard Event holds first place, while Clockedin ranks second. Both brands are owned by Midgaard Event, making us by far the highest-rated provider of escape games in Denmark. Escape spil is used as a broader Danish term equivalent to the English escape game. Whatever you call it, the experience is the same: collaboration, puzzle-solving and time pressure within a themed setting.

Types of escape games

Escape games come in many shapes and formats. Here is an overview of the most important types and what defines them.

Linear and non-linear escape games

One of the most important design choices in an escape game is whether it is linear or non-linear, and this choice has a significant impact on the experience.

In a linear escape game, the team solves one puzzle at a time in a fixed sequence. All participants experience the full game from start to finish, and the progression is clear and easy to follow. The linear format is particularly well suited to smaller groups and to players trying escape games for the first time, as it is easier to keep up and everyone contributes to the same puzzles. DET STORE KUP is a great example of a linear game with a clear and engaging narrative that carries through to the end.

In a non-linear escape game, the team can work on multiple puzzles simultaneously. This requires coordination and task distribution, and collaboration becomes an even more decisive factor. Because there are several tracks to follow at the same time, participants will not necessarily experience everything in the game, and the flow is more complex. In return, it keeps all participants actively engaged and allows for deeper exploration of different parts of the story. DA VINCI and SHERLOCK are strong examples of non-linear games that demand solid collaboration and coordination across the team.

Permanent escape rooms

Permanent escape rooms are fixed installations in dedicated premises with custom-built rooms, set design and integrated technical solutions. This is the most immersive form of escape game, providing the best conditions for a cohesive narrative and high immersion. Midgaard Event operates 21 permanent escape rooms across three locations in Copenhagen through escaperoom.dk and clockedin.dk. Read more about our ESCAPE ROOMS IN COPENHAGEN.

Mobile escape games

Mobile escape games are transportable setups deployed at a location of your choice, whether that's an office, conference room, canteen or somewhere else entirely. The mobile format brings the escape game experience to you anywhere in Denmark without requiring participants to travel to a fixed venue. From full-size mobile escape rooms like OUTBREAK MOBILE ESCAPE ROOM to compact table-top setups like ESCAPE THE BOX. Read more about our MOBILE ESCAPE ROOMS.

Outdoor escape games

Outdoor escape games use the cityscape as their game board. Participants move between locations and solve puzzles along the way, with historical or natural surroundings becoming an active part of the story. It's a natural fit for spring and summer, combining physical activity with puzzle-solving and teamwork. Our most popular outdoor game is OUTDOOR ESCAPE, a dramatic experience set against the historic backdrop of Nyhavn. Read more about our OUTDOOR ESCAPE ROOMS.

Pop-up escape games

Pop-up escape games are set up in open areas and welcome participants on a rolling basis, making them ideal as audience activities at trade fairs, shopping centres and public events. The games are shorter and more accessible than classic escape rooms, and work brilliantly as crowd-pullers that generate energy and attention.

Escape games for team building

Escape games are one of the most effective choices for TEAM BUILDING, because they train precisely the skills that define strong teams: communication, task distribution, creative problem-solving and decision-making under time pressure. The mobile format makes it possible to run team building with escape games directly at your own venue anywhere in Denmark, while the permanent rooms in Copenhagen are an obvious choice for departmental outings and corporate events in the capital.
